Common Questions

How can pastoral counseling help me?

We are complex beings made up of physical body, mind, soul and spirit.  LaDawn uses integrative faith based and psychological counseling with a theoretical Jungian orientation.   The Holy Spirit is sought to help lead and guide the client to root issues of trauma, life transitions, crisis, relationship issues or unknown hidden obstacles to one of developing coping mechanisms or releasing strongholds.  With the integrative work, it is creating unity within the whole self so that healing can take place.  This inner depth work will peel back layers releasing shadow parts of self so that the true authentic self can emerge releasing all of the individuals God given gifts and talents.

Do I really need pastoral counseling?

It is my belief that everyone would benefit from pastoral counseling.  We all have presenting issues that we are faced with in this fallen world that were not necessarily precipitated by our choice.  By being proactive in seeking pastoral counseling, individuals are more likely to have less mental and physical health issues, have more fulfilling relationships, fewer inappropriate outbursts and an increased capacity to deal with adverse situations.

Why do people go to pastoral counseling and how do I know if it is right for me?

Life at any point can change and throw any of us off our intended path as a result of major life transition, unexpected illness, the loss of a loved one, transitions in career, etc.  Sometimes confronting these presenting issues is too much to bear individually where a pastoral counselor can help discern what the Holy Spirit’s invitation is during this time.  It is beneficial to have an intercessor who is praying for you and with you during these critical times because this journey was not meant for you to navigate it alone.

What is pastoral counseling like?

For each individual, pastoral counseling is different.  It will be important to share what current issue has brought you to counseling and what the presenting issue seems to be.  This will open up the opportunity to explore your childhood and life history exploring possible root causes that may also be contributing factors to this difficult time for you.  You will be asked to participate and engage in some new expressive therapy modalities that may seem like unlikely practices that you would initiate on your own.  Bring your open self to a new self-discovery and watch what the Holy Spirit will reveal and unfold.

Do you take insurance?

I am a pastoral counselor and resident in counseling, so I do not take health insurance.  Fees are based on a sliding income fee scale based on gross income.  This is an honor system so incomes are not verified.

Does what we talk about in therapy remain confidential?

Confidentiality is one of the most important components between a client and pastoral counselor. Successful counseling requires a high degree of trust with highly sensitive subject matter that is usually not discussed anywhere but the counselor’s office.   Every counselor should provide a written copy of their confidential disclosure agreement, and you can expect that what you discuss in session will not be shared with anyone.  This is called “Informed Consent”.  Sometimes, however, you may want your counselor  to share information or give an update to someone on your healthcare team (your Physician, Naturopath, Attorney), but by law your counselor cannot release this information without obtaining your written permission.

However, state law and professional ethics require counselors to maintain confidentiality except for the following situations:

* Suspected past or present abuse or neglect of children, adults, and elders to the authorities, including Child Protection and law enforcement, based on information provided by the client or collateral sources.

* If the counselor has reason to suspect the client is seriously in danger of harming him/herself or has threated to harm another person.
